Fish Bin
The Academy of St Nicholas commissioned me to create a sculptural bin to encourage the pupils to recycle cans and bottles in school. We decided to set the pupils a design challenge to come up with bin desing. Following a half day design briefing workshop at school, the pupils then submitted their own design ideas for the new recycling bin. The winning pupil’s design features a large open mouthed Fish. I used her design drawing to create the new sculptural recycling bin. I spent a week in a temporary studio in the DT department at school, where I built the Fish. Pupils and staff visited me to follow its progress while building the framework from bambooa and willow, then recycled crisp packets for the silvery fins. The teachers guess that it will take one day for pupils fill the fish with cans and bottles!
