Coral reefs are the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems. Yet, they are rapidly degrading due to human activities such as overfishing, plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and coastal developments, resulting in substantial coral bleaching in major reef systems.
When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. This is called coral bleaching. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead.
I’m hoping to complete a new large interactive sculpture which will raise awareness of coral bleaching.
This coral sculpture will be a prototype to test out, then eventually I hope to create several more pieces to form a ‘sculptural coral reef’ to increase public impact and engagement with the installation. Lighting sequence in development with Charlie Pethica.
